What does "Important Precedent" mean?

As of this writing, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game has just over ten thousand individual cards. Even if only maybe five percent of those cards will reasonably see play, that is still hundreds of thousands of potential interactions that might come up in play – and that's disregarding the fact that many cards have multiple effects.

By comparison, the Official Card Game database (What is this?) currently documents answers for just over 14,000 individual questions. That's a tiny fraction.

Well, so what happens then?

Well, those cards are still going to get played, and the questions will still need answers. Most judges, and many players – whether they know it or not – understand the game based on their own personalized internal model that has been derived from these 14,000 documented interactions. For most real-world cases, these models have shown to serve as highly reliable predictors of future documentation. In absence of explicit documentation, this is typically viewed as justification for applying them to not-individually-documented scenarios.

So what is an "important precedent"?

We choose to highlight certain Q&A entries that document specific interactions of particular generic interest, which we subjectively feel are important to many commonly-shared models. In addition to being (we hope!) valuable commentary to the reader, these tags also allow us to notice possible shifts in documentation early. Each such highlight tag is accompanied by a brief note outlining why that particular entry was chosen.

Precedent highlights are added on an individual basis, and are a permanent work in progress. If you have a particular Q&A entry that you feel is highly important, or feel that a current highlight tag is lacking, please let us know. You can find our Discord server here.
